The TrustScore

Excellent

The best value in makeup, and unusually for a budget brand, fully vegan and cruelty-free. Several products are frank dupes of $40 originals and perform within a hair of them. Longevity is where the price shows.

What we think

e.l.f. built its business on watching what sells at the prestige counter and shipping a close equivalent for a fifth of the price. That is an unglamorous strategy and it works: Halo Glow, Power Grip Primer and the Camo concealer are genuinely good products that happen to resemble much more expensive ones.

The brand is also fully vegan and Leaping Bunny certified across the entire range, which is rare at this price and rarer still at this scale.

Formulas and ingredients

Complexion products are the strength. Power Grip Primer is excellent. Halo Glow gives a convincing luminous base. Camo concealer has real coverage and a wide shade range.

Where the price shows: wear time. Most e.l.f. base products need setting and touching up sooner than their prestige counterparts. Eyeshadow pigment is inconsistent between palettes.

Skincare is filler. Competent, cheap, unnecessary if you already own CeraVe.

Price and value

The highest value score in makeup on this list. When a $14 product does 80% of what a $44 one does, the arithmetic is hard to argue with.

Sustainability

Fully vegan and Leaping Bunny certified. Packaging is mostly plastic and the fast-follow model is inherently high-churn, which the sustainability score reflects.

Who it is for

Anyone building a makeup kit on a budget, and anyone who wants vegan makeup without paying a premium for it.

Pros and cons

What we liked

  • Fully vegan and Leaping Bunny certified across the entire range
  • Complexion products that genuinely rival products costing four times more
  • Very wide availability at drugstore prices
  • Camo concealer has a broad, well-distributed shade range

What we did not

  • Wear time consistently trails prestige equivalents
  • Eyeshadow pigment varies noticeably between palettes
  • Skincare line adds nothing
  • High-churn product model with mostly plastic packaging

For complexion products, close. Power Grip Primer and Halo Glow perform within a hair of the products they resemble. The gap shows in wear time — expect to touch up an e.l.f. base sooner than a prestige one.
