The TrustScore

Very good

It is still the best-performing makeup sponge, and it is three times the price of alternatives that are close behind. It also needs replacing every three months, which makes the real annual cost the thing to weigh rather than the sticker.

What we think

Beautyblender created this category in 2007 and the original still blends better than most copies — the density and rebound are genuinely different, and it leaves less of a streak edge than cheaper sponges.

The question is not whether it is good. It is whether it is three times better, and it is not.

Performance

Damp, the sponge nearly doubles in size and applies foundation with almost no visible edge. The taper gets under the eye and around the nose properly. On that narrow measure it remains the best in the category.

The cost nobody mentions

A makeup sponge is a consumable. Used daily, it should be replaced roughly every three months — porous, damp, and repeatedly loaded with product is exactly the environment bacteria like, and a sponge that has developed a smell or visible discolouration is past due.

Four replacements a year at this price is a real annual cost, and it is the number to compare against alternatives rather than the shelf price.

Alternatives

Real Techniques' sponge costs a third as much and blends nearly as well. Several drugstore sponges are close behind. If you are replacing four a year, that gap compounds.

Who it is for

Someone who wants the best blend and is not counting the replacement cost. Anyone weighing value should buy the cheaper sponge and replace it more often.

Beautyblender FAQs

About every three months with daily use. A damp, porous sponge loaded with product is a good environment for bacteria, and washing between uses slows that but does not stop it. Replace sooner if it develops a smell, discolours, or starts tearing.
